Hi, I'm John Redding

FAMILY BACKGROUND

I come from an Irish, working class family from Kansas City MO. My father was a WWII Navy Veteran whose favorite saying was "Make yourself useful". Growing up there were always chores and work to be done. That good work ethic sustained me while getting a college degree in Physics, running college track, earning a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, and taking MBA classes at night.

I have two grown children with good Irish names. Kyle is the manager of Data Securities with Bosch near Detroit and Erin is a marketing manager for Google, working remotely from Denver CO. My partner of twenty years is Dr. Barbara Barkovich.

A THRIVING CAREER

One of the benefits of having a long, varied business career is acquiring a wide range of skills. My educational resume includes a B.S. in Physics, an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering, and an MBA.

I spent 30 years working for General Electric beginning as a nuclear engineer and ending in charge of marketing and sales. Along the way I acquired financial management and six sigma skills.

After General Electric, I was involved in three startups in the energy industry where I learned how to think and act like an entrepreneur in order to build a business from the bottom up.

COMMUNITY IS IMPORTANT TO ME

While living in San Jose CA, I was Chair of the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Commission. I also served as a member of the San Jose Planning Commission task force called "Infill Housing". I was board president of the Almaden Valley Youth Counseling Service.

Upon arriving in Mendocino, I joined the Board of Mendocino Area Parks Association during which time I was the Board president. I served on the Board of the Mendocino Botanical Gardens and most recently the Mendocino Coast Humane Society.

For the last three years and four months, I have been the Treasurer of the Mendocino Coast Health Care District, an elected position. During that time, the Board secured the future of the hospital by entering into an affiliation with Adventist Health to operate our facilities, launching plans to build a new health care facility and formulating a plan that will both retire all term debt and set aside money for the new facility.

But the sustainability of any healthcare facility depends upon a thriving, prosperous community with new jobs and new housing. I was prompted to run for the Board because of the lack of urgency for addressing these needs throughout the County.
